Bob Spangler: San Diego Padre?
Yes, It's true. Before Bob became a radio announcer, he was a pitcher for the old PCL (Pacific Coast League) San Diego Padres. (That's him, the handsome guy in the center, getting pitching instruction at a spring training facility)
Bob loved to tell the story of his greatest baseball moment. It involved a spring training game and the great Pittsburgh Pirate Ralph Kiner. Bob would love to tell about facing the legendary right hand hitter. After getting ahead in the count 1 ball and 2 strikes, Bob told of a home run that "Still is flying" somewhere. It was the longest home run he'd ever given up. Bob just couldn't believe a ball could go that far that fast!
