SHOOTING IN LINCOLN CITY
February 8, 2010

Lincoln City Police received information of a shooting at the Ridge Apartments. Police were able to locate and stop the SUV that was reported to be involved in the shooting. There were 3 Hispanic males in the SUV, two had been hit by gunfire with one of them found deceased. The third person is cooperating with investigators.


STOLEN CRAB POTS RECOVERED
February 8, 2010

State police concluded an investigation into the theft of approximately 60 commercial crab pots. Investigation showed that the suspects roommate had leased the crab pots and a permit from another fishermen. When he was done crabbing and tried to return the pots the mans roommate had reportedly sold them prior to him being able to return them.


KIEZER MAN ARRESTED FOR BURGLARIES

Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies responded to three burglaries, which occurred at residences off Hwy 20 in the east Lincoln County area. A 60-year old Kiezer man was determined to be a suspect and a search of his home was conducted and he was taken into custody.

PET FOOD DONATION FOR ANIMAL SHELTER

The Lincoln County animal shelter received a generous gift from Steven and Charissa Prewitt of Lincoln City. They made a donation of over 900 pounds of pet food and over $200 in donations they gathered from community patrons who stopped to see their Christmas Lights extravaganza in Lincoln City in December.


DEPOE BAY SEWAGE SPILL

The Depoe Bay harbor lift station experienced a sewage spill. Upon public works maintenance crews’ inspection of the lift station when it was noticed that there were low flows crews found that there was a problem at the station with the electrical board and about 17,000 gallons of sewage that spilled into the bay.


NEW BOAT RAMP ON THE SILETZ

The Lincoln County parks and recreation department accepted a Oregon State Marine Board grant, which will go to help cover the costs of building a new boat ramp on the Siletz River. The new ramp will be located off of hwy 229 by milepost 6. The area will have not only the new boat ramp but will also have parking spaces and a new restroom.

AQUARIUM YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is looking for teenagers to join its youth volunteer team. Young people have an opportunity to explore the fascinating world of marine science and share their knowledge as Aquarium interpreters. Enrollment is open now through March 1st for teens entering 9th grade 12th grade Applicants need to submit an application packet by March 1 and must attend every training session. More information is availabe at www.aquarium.org.


PLANTING ALONG HWY 20 PROJECT

A subcontractor working on the US 20, Pioneer Mountain-Eddyville road and bridge construction project planted more than 10,000 plants on acreage set aside as part of the mitigation required to offset the small amount of wetlands impacted by the project. The subcontractor planted various species of wetland plants, shrubs, willows and conifers near the east end of the project.


TSUNAMI AND EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners heard from James Roddy with the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries who is in the process of launching a new tsunami outreach and education program on the coast. This is part of a National Hazard mitigation program a multi-year multi-million dollar project.


OREGON’S METH SOLUTION ADOPTED IN MISSISSIPPI

The State of Mississippi passed legislation to follow Oregon’s lead to eliminate threat of methamphetamine labs. In 2005, Oregon passed the nation’s strongest anti-meth legislation.  Among other things, that legislation returned pseudoephedrine, the key ingredient necessary to make meth, to a prescription drug, as it was prior to 1976.

LINCOLN COUNTY’S GOT TALENT

For her audition, Casey Rilatos, from Toledo High School, accompanied herself on the guitar while singing, “I’d Lie,” by Taylor Swift.

Ten young performers have been selected as finalists for the “Lincoln County’s Got Talent!” competition to be held Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Newport Performing Arts Center. The Auditions were held this last Saturday in Lincoln City with students from all over Lincoln County auditioning. The 8 final acts include students from age 9 through 18.

Another candidate Craig Gilley has filed to run for County Commissioner for position 1 against Don Lindly. Craig is a clinical councilor with the Lincoln County Health and Human Services department. According to his filing application Gilley has worked in the State of Washington for the Department of Social and Health Services.


REWARD OFFERED FOR WIRE THIEVES

Pacific Power, working with Lincoln County law enforcement officials are offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of individuals responsible for a series of wire thefts that have occurred since mid-November. If residents see any suspicious activity around power poles you should call 911.


BLUE RIBBON COMMITTEE MEETINGS

There was a public meeting held regarding the Lincoln County fairgrounds and fair event and an opportunity for the public to provide their input. The Blue Ribbon Committee heard from several who are in support of 4-H and youth programs at the fairgrounds. They also advocated for better facilities to be able to rent out for events.


WALDPORT RV PARK OWNER FINED BY DEQ

Oregon DEQ has fined Anthony M. Simon, owner of the King Silver RV Park & Marina, a total of $108,324 for allegedly discharging sewage onto the ground and operating an un-permitted sewage treatment system along the Alsea River near Waldport. DEQ acknowledged that Simon is taking steps to minimize impacts of the violations


19-YEAR OLD ASSAULTED BY ROOMMATES

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies and Newport Police officers responded to South Beach on a report of an assault. The victim, a 19-year old male, was transported to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital for injuries to his head and face. The victims’ two roommates were later arrested and jailed on charges of assault 3.

OCCC TRANSFER DAYS

Representatives from colleges and universities from Oregon and beyond visited Oregon Coast Community College's new Central County Campus, in Newport, to share information and answer questions about their programs and institutions.  This annual event provided students thinking of transferring or students who are simply looking at the possibilities of higher education, a unique opportunity to meet representatives of many four-year colleges and universities.


TAXI PERMITS REQUIRED

The city of Newport city council heard safety concerns regarding the offering of “free rides” during the seafood and wine festival weekend. During the 2010 Seafood and Wine Festival weekend, anyone who desires to offer rides for compensation, or free rides for donations, is required to obtain a Temporary Taxi Driver Permit.


COMMON SCHOOL FUND DISTRIBUTION

Oregon's 197 K-12 public school districts received the first of two 2010 Common School Fund payments of over $25 million. The funding was included in the 2009-2011 budget approved by the Oregon Legislature last year. Lincoln County’s share is over $235,000. This money goes into the districts general fund to help pay for teachers and support schools.


TERRY THOMPSON RUNS FOR RE-ELECTION

Lincoln County Commissioner Terry Thompson announced that he is running for re-election for another term. Thompson said he wants to finish the job he has started and continue to deal with the current economic challenges facing the county. He added that he believes Lincoln County currently has an excellent team of individuals working together to create a healthy economic future for the county.
