TALKS CONTINUE WITH ROADS END ANNEX

City manager David Hawker provided the Lincoln City council with a draft ordinance requiring consents to annex the Roads End area residents into the cities urban growth boundary. Hawker also told the council that the city has spent a huge amount of money, $9 million just recently for water improvements to be able to serve these customers. Now he said its time for those residents to annex to the city.

BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN SUMMER SAFETY

With summer in full swing, more bicyclists and pedestrians are on the road. Riding a bike or walking are healthy and fun ways to get around, but dangerous situations can occur when motorists don’t see bicyclists or pedestrians. Unfortunately, not all people who share the road are conscious of their surroundings. ODOT urges drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to use caution when on the roadways.

PORT HEARS ABOUT CITIES TRANSPORTATION PLAN

The port of Newport board of commissioners this week heard from the City of Newport regarding the cities South Beach transportation plan. Derrick Tokos the cities planning director said they are working to try to meet the needs of all traffic users. The plan calls for re-aligning the Rogue access with Ferry Slip road and create a round a bout at the end of OSU drive near the new NOAA building site.

COWAN TOWN HALL

State Rep. Jean Cowan hosted a town hall meeting in Lincoln City and had about 40 people or so in attendance. Cowan provided an update on efforts to balance the state budget, which is facing a nearly $600 million revenue shortfall for the current biennium. Other issues talked about included hwy 18, seniors and 911 funding and consolidation issues.

TOLEDO GETS RARE HELP

The City of Toledo received confirmation this week that Jeffery Bean from Chicago will be the RARE participant. Jeff will assist the Main Street Program by helping create stable funding, developing a volunteer base for the program, work with the Economic Restructuring Committee to assist local businesses and recruit complementary businesses for vacancies, and help with image development for the district.

SCHOOL DISTRICT CUTS DAYS

Lincoln County School District and the Lincoln County Education Association Friday agreed to a contract reduction of 12 workdays during the 2010/2011 school year. This is just one step the school district is taking in response to an estimated $2.5 million budget deficit for the coming school year as a result of state and federal revenue cuts.

AQUARIUM OFFERS $5 ADMISSION TO RESIDENTS

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is offering Lincoln County residents $5 admission to the Aquarium now through September 1. Lincoln County residents will be required to provide proof of Lincoln County residency and will receive $5 admission, which applies to all ages. The Aquarium is open every day and summer time hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Linda Roy announced that she has accepted the Chamber Boards offer for the Executive Director position. Linda said her decision was based on many things but most importantly she wants to be able to continue with the foundation of work that began with the past and current board of directors and also with the previous director Mike Holden.

911 CONSOLIDATION CONSIDERED

The Lincom executive board agreed for commissioner Lindly to draft a letter to the city managers and mayors of Lincoln City and Toledo to see if there is interest in working toward consolidation. Lincoln City manager David Hawker provided some information to the city council regarding the possible consolidation of 911 services including benefits and drawbacks.

WOMAN ARRESTED IN SOUTH BEACH FOR DRUGS

Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Sorby contacted Cynthia L Robledo of South Beach at her home as she had a zero bail Felony Parole Violation Warrant issued for her arrest. When Deputy Sorby placed her into custody he located several baggies some of which contained methamphetamine and several different types of prescription pills she did not have a prescription for.

NEWPORT AIRPORT LOOKS FOR VOLUNTEERS

According to Gene Cossey Newport Airport Director the airport committee is currently looking for volunteers to greet people as they get off of the planes and arrive in Newport. Volunteers are needed to help out with answering phones, providing customer service and helping people to know what kind of services are available in the area.

OREGON CULTURAL TRUST GRANTS

The Oregon Cultural Trust announced $1.47 million in fiscal year 2011 grants to humanities, heritage and arts nonprofits across Oregon. Each year, the Trust distributes 42% of the prior fiscal year's revenues; 58% remains in the endowment. Locally the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, will receive over $6,000.

DOG PARK COMING SOON TO TOLEDO

The Toledo city council unanimously approved for staff to establish a dog park. The city staff took a look at city owned property around Toledo and found the perfect spot a 4-acre parcel off of East Slope Road. Toledo city staff are currently working on making the necessary improvements to the area and are hoping for a late summer opening.

MAN ARRESTED FROM SUMMER FEST

Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of a fight near the carnival area at the Toledo Summer Festival. Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the suspect had reportedly been involved in a physical altercation with another man. The suspect was highly intoxicated and became confrontational when the deputies tried to detain him in handcuffs. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

SNLH AWARDS GRANTS

Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital (SNLH) will award a total of $31,250 in grants from its Social Accountability Budget to eight local non-profit agencies. Social Accountability grants are awarded annually within Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties and are part of Samaritan’s larger Community Benefit program.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER MAKING THREATS

Sheriffs Deputies responded to a report of disorderly conduct occurring at the Depoe Bay City Hall. A male subject was trespassed from the location. Shortly afterward LINCOM dispatch received 911 reports of the same man reportedly threatening to cut a boat loose from a dock in the Harbor. He was located and taken into custody.

TILLAMOOK ROAD CLOSURE

The Oregon Department of Forestry has closed the North Fork Wilson Rd. at milepost 2 now through Aug. 8 for bridge construction. A contractor will be installing a bridge over a fish-bearing stream just north of the Diamond Mill. Workers will remove the culvert, construct bridge abutments, and install bridge beams. No vehicle access of any kind will be allowed through the project area.

FUNDING APPROVED FOR DREDGING

Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced that the Senate Appropriations Committee has agreed to provide money to improve channels and jetties at ports along the Oregon Coast, including over one million for dredging on Yaquina Bay and harbor. The act now goes to the full Senate for a vote.

Scientists have long known that wind-driven “upwelling” during the spring and summer along the Pacific Coast is critical for bringing deep, nutrient-rich water to the surface that form the base of the marine food web. But a new study suggests that mini-pulses of upwelling that occur in February may be just as important in creating ideal ocean conditions.

SOLV EXPANDS FALL CLEANUP

SOLV announced that its annual Fall Beach Cleanup event will expand to include waterway and river beach cleanup projects across the state. For the first time, thousands of volunteers will clean up Oregon’s beaches from the California border to the Columbia River and also work along rivers, creeks, lakes and other waterways.
